The role of reverse osmosis in the industry

In many industrial sectors, the quality of the water determines the success of the processes. Reverse osmosis systems, especially for industry, enable extremely fine filtration, completely without chemicals and with a particularly high level of efficiency.

Typical areas of application and tasks

  • Desalination of water for use in sensitive production processes
  • Reduction of germs and particles without chemical additives
  • Conditioning of process water for stable operating conditions
  • Lower operating costs due to reduced maintenance and longer service life of systems
  • Improvement of product quality, e.g. through limescale-free cleaning water
  • Compliance with legal requirements in regulated industries such as pharmaceuticals or food

Advantages over conventional water treatment

Compared to conventional methods such as ion exchange or chemical treatment, reverse osmosis offers decisive technical and economic advantages in industrial applications:

1. higher filtration accuracy

Even the finest dissolved substances such as salts (99 %) are reliably removed. High retention of microorganisms and organic residues.

2. no chemical additives necessary

Reverse osmosis works purely physically, i.e. without chemical additives that would have to be removed later.

3. constant water quality

The systems reliably deliver consistent water values, completely independent of fluctuations in the raw water quality.

4. energy-efficient and low-maintenance

Modern industrial systems are designed for low energy consumption and long service life.

5. can be integrated to save space

Thanks to their compact design, many reverse osmosis systems for industry can also be easily integrated into existing infrastructures.

This is where reverse osmosis systems are used in industry

Water quality requirements vary greatly depending on the industry. Reverse osmosis systems offer the necessary flexibility and purity. Our systems are designed for maximum industrial performance and are used in numerous sectors:

Pharmaceutical industry

Sterile water without microparticles, germs or dissolved salts is essential in pharmaceutical production. Our reverse osmosis systems ensure consistently high purity and meet regulatory requirements such as GMP or FDA.

Food and beverage industry

Water is often a component of the end product and must therefore be completely tasteless, germ-free and residue-free. Reverse osmosis guarantees consistent quality and thus protects against production losses.

Chemical industry

Demineralized water is required for precise mixing ratios and safe reactions. Our systems deliver exactly the desired result reliably, permanently and with high efficiency.

Energy and power plant sector

Limescale-free, pure feed water for steam boilers or circulation water extends the service life of systems and reduces downtimes.

Air conditioning and ventilation technology

Evaporators, humidifiers and cooling systems only work smoothly if the water is completely residue-free. Our systems prevent limescale deposits and significantly increase operational reliability.

How does an industrial reverse osmosis system work?

Reverse osmosis is a physical process for the effective and sustainable removal of dissolved substances from water without the use of chemical additives.

High pressure (10-15 bar) forces the raw water through a semi-permeable membrane. This only allows water molecules to pass through, while up to 99 % of the salts, germs, particles and organic substances contained are retained and discharged as concentrate. The result is ultra-pure permeate water.

Fatro® A200 to A500: Compact industrial class

These single-stage reverse osmosis systems offer a yield of up to 67 % with a permeate flow of 200 to 500 l/h. It is ideal for small to medium-sized industrial applications. High-quality stainless steel components, automatic rinsing cycles and app-based control ensure efficiency and durability.

Fatro® M250 to M550: Maximum performance & control

For higher requirements, these models offer up to 550 l/h with a system yield of 80 %. With integrated remote monitoring, leak sensors and PLC control, they enable centralized supply of the entire operation, including safety functions and statistical evaluation.

All our systems are CE-compliant, modularly expandable and ready for online or offline operation.

FAQs

What does a reverse osmosis system for industry cost?

The costs vary depending on the performance requirements, sector and system size. Simple systems start in the four-digit range, while complex systems can be significantly higher. We will be happy to provide you with an individual quote.

What water quality can be achieved?

Our systems achieve a retention rate of up to 99 %, whereby salts, germs and organic residues are filtered out. The result is ultra-pure permeate water that meets even the highest requirements.

How often do filters or membranes need to be changed?

The service life depends on the water quality and usage. As a rule, pre-filters should be replaced every 6-12 months and membranes every 2-5 years. We will be happy to advise you individually.

Are there funding programs for water treatment in Switzerland?

Yes, in certain cases, such as supplementary, sustainable or energy-efficient projects, cantonal or sector-specific subsidies are possible. There is currently no funding for pure water treatment. We will support you with the clarification.
