Water softening: which method is effective?

Do you believe in magic? When it comes to our water, we prefer to rely on scientific confirmation. The ion exchange process for water softening has it.

But we don't want to deprive you of other methods. We have tested all the methods available on the market and found no softening effect. If one of these methods had convinced us, we would include it in our portfolio. Experience reports from users of these so-called physical descaling or softening methods tell a different story. But as we all know, words are patient, just as the providers of such systems would have us believe.

Frei AquaService only offers you water softening processes whose effect
is scientifically confirmed. Decide for yourself - and protect yourself from bad investments.

Physical water softening: pure magic?

Magnets, electrical impulses, sieve technology and electrophoresis

Procedures are offered that work by means of magnetic fields. Magnetic fields are said to change the structure of limescale compounds so that they cannot form deposits. There is no scientifically reliable evidence that such methods can actually reduce water hardness or prevent limescale deposits. Studies by the University of Applied Sciences Rapperswil HSR and the Stiftung Warentest have confirmed that permanent magnets are ineffective for descaling water.

Devices that use electrical impulses to change the structure of the limescale also advertise effective softening. However, real water softening means that calcium and magnesium ions, which are responsible for water hardness, are removed from the water or converted. This is done by chemical processes, such as in ion exchangers, in which calcium and magnesium ions are replaced by sodium ions.

Another method is the so-called ion sieve technology. Here, devices use fruit acid to filter the limescale out of the water. The effect is controversial and unproven.

Descalers that rely on electrophoresis are also available. The process is based on the separation of charged particles in the water, such as calcium and magnesium ions, which are the main components of limescale. Electrical impulses are used to influence the limescale particles so that they are flushed out more easily. However, electrophoresis alone is not economical for softening large quantities of water. In order to remove significant quantities of calcium and magnesium ions, a complex - and expensive - system would be required to enable continuous treatment.

Ion exchangers for water softening: Established and scientifically confirmed process

Water softeners based on the ion exchange process are the only effective - and efficient - method of descaling water. Their effectiveness has been proven by scientific studies. The principle has been known and well researched for around 100 years. According to the leaflet issued by the German Association for Water, Gas and Heat, softening systems based on ion exchangers work reliably as long as they are regularly maintained and properly adjusted. Tap water that has passed through such a water softening system is safe and healthy.

The device contains ion exchange resin (resin beads) through which the tap water flows. The calcium and magnesium ions contained in the water, which are responsible for the water hardness, dock onto it and are replaced by the resin's own sodium or potassium ions. The resin is regularly regenerated by rinsing with a salt solution (sodium chloride or potassium chloride). The depleted ions are thus replenished. The result is soft water that contains hardly any calcium or magnesium, which prevents the formation of limescale.

An ion exchanger is ideal if: Your water is hard or very hard (high calcium and magnesium content), you want to avoid limescale deposits in appliances and pipes and/or you want to improve the efficiency of household appliances.

What specialist portals report about water softeners

Many households struggle with hard water - limescale deposits in appliances, high energy costs and tedious cleaning are the consequences. However, not all water softeners deliver what they promise. Various studies and specialist articles show which methods really work.

At Frei AquaService, we rely on proven and tested technologies so that you are guaranteed to benefit from soft water - for less limescale, more comfort and a longer service life for your household appliances.

Myth or fact?

On the Internet and from providers of "alternative" methods for water softening, there are objections that speak against ion exchangers. Myth or truth?

Myth 1: Too little calcium and magnesium in drinking water

Wrong! Ion exchangers do not completely soften the water, sufficient minerals remain in the water.
Drinking water.

Wrong! The sodium level required by the WHO is never exceeded, but is usually significantly lower.
supported.

Wrong! Sodium chloride is used to regenerate the ion exchanger resin. This
Natural salt is considered a natural resource in Switzerland. The salinization of the waters is
negligible.

Wrong! The SVGW or DVGW seal is often used for advertising purposes. These say nothing about the
function and their effect. They merely document that there is no negative influence on
the drinking water was detected.

Wrong! The investment in an investment from a reputable provider pays for itself within 2 to 3 years.

Wrong! By reducing the use of detergents and cleaning agents, extending the service life of
household appliances and heating as well as optimized regeneration programs, these appliances can be
as environmentally friendly.
